“The area around the former World Trade Center is a sacred space. It is a place where thousands of Americans’ lives were taken by the purveyors of a hostile ideology based on Islam. The Cordoba House, a 13-story mosque and Islamic cultural center planned for a site near Ground Zero, is at best inappropriate, and at worst an attempt to hijack the memory of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.”—
One: This is a perfect example of how education is failing. Anyone who can say with an honest face that this was an attack by Islam on America doesn’t understand shit. Yes, religion was undoubtably involved, just as religion is undoubtably involved in American politics. Religion is always the easy way out - it veils and simplifies more complicated issues, for all sides involved. The history of the Middle East is far more nuanced than “a bunch of backwards, Fundamentalist, violent Muslims who all hate America”. American actions in the Middle East in the past helped create a situation where a good amount of the population rightfully hated America. There is far more to every situation than most Americans want to bother to learn. And let’s not even begin to get to how inappropriate it is to declare Ground Zero a sacred space and exclude all other religions. I can’t imagine Christians were the only ones who died there - if they put a cross up at Ground Zero for every person lost to the attack, would they find it abhorrent to allow the dead Muslims who were in the building their own religious symbols? Or would that be too inappropriate for them?
The idea that Islam is one religion is so stupid, it’s like saying that Christianity is one religion. If all Islam is represented by al-qaida then all Christianity has to be represented by Scott Roeder.
